I’m having an ArtAttack!

Less than 10 miles away in the town of Somerville, there’s ArtAttack, a gallery
featuring a unique blend of fine arts and crafts. Says owner/artist Heather
Somershein, “I try to incorporate all types of art into my selection from glassware,
jewelry, handmade lamps to incredible photographers and painters. I don't
discriminate when it comes to good art, but do try and create a blend between fine
art and craft within the gallery. And Somershein makes it a point to create an
atmosphere where everyone’s welcome, even dogs. “It is not a formal affair to look at
art,” she says. She just wants people to enjoy it. In her attempt to make art fun,
accessible and affordable, items are priced from $4 to $3500.

Somershein is herself an artist, having worked with the likes of Peter Max and
Alexandra Nechita. “I think I’m more understanding of artists because I am one,” she
told me, “and I feel as if have chosen a wide range of artists because of their quality.
I don’t need to hawk them; their work sells itself.” Every six weeks, Somershein
schedules an opening to exhibit new art talent. The day I visited, there was an
eclectic collection of jewelry, home furnishings (such as mobiles by Joel Hotchkis,
whose work is sold in museum stores like the Guggenheim, the SFMOMA and the Art
Institute in Chicago) as well as wonderfully whimsical handbags by Mary Frances.
